Happy Holidays Hudson fans!! Hope everyone is enjoying the season. So here we are, at the end of another year, heck it seems like only yesterday I was writing about the Y2K scare and here we are again. It has been a good year for Hudson fans thanks largely to Hudson’s multiple convention appearances this fall. For those of you who were lucky enough to have seen the incomparable Ms. Leick live, you no doubt have a tale to tell. As you know, I asked people to share some of those experiences with us, so you will see some of those great stories. The enthusiasm from our fellow fans overseas is apparent from their glowing con reports! If you also attended most of the conventions this year, then you got a chance to see the great booth set-up that Wesser and Mike (yup our very own web gurus) created for the HLOFC. From the poster sized photos to the great badges, they did a spectacular job so drop them a line tell them so.
On charity:
On another note, I was able to attend the charity breakfast at the Palo Alto convention and heard some great words of wisdom from the charity chair. Anita Ellis said at the end, and forgive any paraphrasing error here, "You make a living by what you get, but you make a life by what you give". The charity is The James W. Ellis foundation, which has done marvelous work in assisting students affected by cancer and hardship, so that they may remain in school. As Hudson said in Chicago, "It's an incredible cause". Hudson fans did themselves proud in Chicago by buying $280 in raffle tickets for HLOFC t-shirts and Hudson poster give-aways, all of which went to benefit the Ellis Foundation. Anita has asked me to pass along her sincere thanks to all the fans who participated in the raffle and contributed to the cause. If you'd like to contribute to this cause, but can't attend one of her fabulous star-studded charity breakfasts (at the Creation conventions), you can also send donations to Anita Ellis, 242 Student Center, 200 Hofstra University, Hempstead NY 11549.
Someone mentioned that Hudson is so enthusiastic about charity causes that maybe we as her fans could do more. I agree, I think we can do more. For those of you that know me, you know that I have been an avid supporter of Sword and Staff, which helps facilitate fan donations to many worthy charities. The idea behind the Sword and Staff is that fans (initially Xena fans, but now most anyone) can do something for the ‘greater good’. To date, they have contributed over $175,000.00 to a variety of worthwhile causes including the Howard County Domestic Violence Shelters (selected as the recipient for ZonCon), WarChild and RAINN (these were selected for the recipients of the ‘Farewell to Callisto’ auction shortly after "Sacrifice I & II" aired). For more information, visit their website at
Many times a celebrity will offer their name recognition and ‘starpower’ to bring awareness to an issue, not unlike Lucy Lawless recently did to raise awareness of child abuse in New Zealand. However, doing good for your fellow human being does not rely on a celebrity telling you what causes are worthy. To this end, I would encourage you to look within your own communities for volunteer opportunities. Service to others comes in many different forms, from helping one person, to time spent volunteering, money and resources. I have worked with many non-profit organizations and the largest shortage they have is volunteer power. Sometimes, the difference you can make is as simple as a mouse-click away at websites like http://WWW.GreaterGood.com. Here is a message from them about the difference that a click can make:
"We hope you'll take advantage of the many ways you can do good online everyday. Here's a complete list of our family of sites:

More ways to do good online are on the horizon. On behalf of The Hunger Site, thank you for clicking for a better world. Together, we're making a difference."
Another worthy cause is the Penny Lane gift giving program for under-privileged children [
http://www.thegalacticgateway.com/pt/santa.htm]. This one has a pretty tight deadline, but you get the idea, and if you are too late now, please be aware that Penny Lane can use other contributions throughout the year. Pat Tallman works with this organization. How does this relate to Hudson you ask? Pat was the stunt double for Hudson in Chill Factor. I always try to bring it back around. ;-)The holiday season is a time when people are moved by the spirit of goodwill, but I can tell you from experience, this time of year non-profit organizations are swamped by offers. If you can’t find a place to devote your energy now, remember to try again after the first of the year, or in the spring or summer.
Some final thoughts from those who have said it better than I :-)

2000 Hercules & Xena Convention
Chicago, Illinois
November 25th and 26th
[hardcoremike69@hotmail.com]
For three years now, from the moment I entered the Hudson Leick Official Fan Club, I have dreamed of what it would be like if I ever was given the opportunity to meet Hudson. What would I do? How would I feel? What would I say to her? I have viewed her many other convention appearances through the fan club’s website and wondered when, if ever, I would receive the same joy that Hudson has given to countless others. I am now proud to say that over the weekend of November 25th and 26th in the city of Chicago, I finally lived out a dream of mine as I met Hudson Leick. This is my story.
When Hudson came out onto the stage on Saturday, I was nearly bubbling over with anticipation and excitement. Even with all the flashbulbs going off, I was still able to see the devilish grin for which she is known. After numerous poses and some quick humor, Hudson proceeded to give everyone kisses, Hershey’s Kisses. During the kiss melee I was hit twice in the head by the little chocolate pieces. Surprisingly from a distance, it does hurt when they hit you. Hudson warned us ahead of time, but I could not complain, I was receiving kisses from Hudson.
After I took the pictures of Hudson that I wanted, I moved into one of the lines for the microphones that were located on both sides of the stage. While waiting in line I began to contemplate what I would ask Hudson. And many times while thinking of what to ask, I nearly broke into tears of joy, because I was going to be talking to Hudson.
At some point a young girl on the opposite side of the stage asked Hudson if she had any pets and what their names were. Hudson replied that she has a Chihuahua named Griffin. This may seem irrelevant, but it is very significant to my not so far off future.
When I at long last made my way to the microphone I took a deep breath and jumped into the deep end. I started off by thanking Hudson for coming to Chicago. I believe I gave her about five consecutive 'thank you's, to which was answered by a very loud applause from the crowd. I then asked Hudson what her personal opinion was regarding the state of Florida and the Presidential Election. Hudson, for a lack of better terms, emphatically said that she just does not care anymore. For my second question, I asked her about her experiences in the Fallen Angel. I personally wanted to know how long it took her to get into the demon costume. Hudson answered that it took about four hours and that whenever her wings would flap, that it was the work of two crewmembers on either side of her. For my final question, I asked like many others did that night, if I could have a hug. Hudson said yes, but before I go any further I must note that at the time I was wearing one of those floppy fishing hats with the large bill all the way around it. And being a gentleman I removed the hat from my head before going up to her. Well when I removed my hat, Hudson and everyone else noticed that I keep my hair very short. Hudson when viewing this said and I quote: "Oh it’s a fuzzy little friend." I then received my hug from Hudson and during this, time seemed to slow down. Even though I only embraced her for maybe ten seconds it seemed like an eternity to me, and during that embrace it felt like every burden, all the stress, every painful moment that I have endured during my lifetime left my body and my soul. I believe her touch had relieved me of all that pain and at that moment I never felt better in my life. As our embrace ended I started to get a tear in my eye as I thanked Hudson. But before I left the stage someone in the crowd yelled that my hair looks like the fur of a shorthaired Chihuahua. Hudson then began to pat my head as if she was patting the head of her own dog, and embarrassed the hell out of me.
Later that night when we were allowed to get a signature from Hudson, I handed her a photo that she had never seen before. While on the Internet one day, I came across a photo of Hudson as Callisto. The photo was done in black and white, and the photo shows Hudson on a horse with her sword as she is screaming her head off. Hudson loved the photo and asked where I had found it, but unfortunately at the time I could not remember where I did find it. Before I left the table, said to Hudson: "Yo quiero, Hudson Leick?" She got a good laugh out of this and said that at the Palo Alto convention someone gave her a shirt of the Taco-Bell Chihuahua with it saying that. Hudson then petted my head once more as I went back to my seat, red as a tomato.
Before the night was over, I was able to get my picture taken with Hudson. For the entire time that I have been following Hudson’s career, this is the moment I have dreamed of the most, to be able to freeze a moment in my life with a woman whom I respect and admire like no other. When I went up to her, I once again removed my hat, which I hope she appreciated because I do not know of too many men who will remove their hat when they are in the presence of a woman. Anyway, when I walked up to Hudson, she ever so carefully hugged my head and petted it once again. I know that when I get the pictures back, I will have a look of pure bliss upon my face.
Fortunately, I had the opportunity to attend the charity breakfast on Sunday morning. I would have never believed that my life would get any better than it did on Saturday night, but assumptions are usually wrong, and was I ever wrong. The anticipation of waiting to meet Hudson became almost unbearable. Many times, I nearly broke down and began to cry, but I was able to keep my composure, and at the most it was only a single tear. While waiting, those others who were sitting at my table noticed that Hudson was climbing up onto the tables to talk with the guests. So me and another gentleman proceeded to ready our table for Hudson. When Hudson came up to our table I began to move my chair out to make room for her, when much to my surprise, she sat right in my lap. At that exact moment, my body temperature had to have gone up about two hundred degrees and I literally began to hyperventilate. I was not breathing and Hudson noticed this right away. She then asked me to take some deep breaths, which I did, but she reminded me that I should breath through the nose. We then did some breathing together as if we were preparing for some yoga exercises. Hudson then asked me what I was thinking at the time. All I could think about was that I have the most amazing woman in the world sitting in my lap. I knew that that would not sound right, but I did say: " I can now die a happy man." Hudson got a laugh out of this.
A woman who was sitting at my table then asked Hudson if she remembered who I was. Hudson said that she remembered me as the Chihuahua Boy and once again began to pet my hair. The same woman who asked the question of Hudson then wanted to know if I wanted any pictures of this, and most definitely I did. As I began to hand my camera to the woman, I noticed that Hudson was sitting on the strap of the camera. As I began to pull it, Hudson yelped and calmly said: "hey, that’s my private area!" I felt so bad that I had inadvertently done this, and I began to apologize for what I had done, and Hudson said that it was okay. Then as a way to make up for my mistake, Hudson grabbed my right hand and placed it on her chest just below her neck and held it there with her right hand. I nearly fainted right there. With my head resting on her shoulder and my hands gently caressing her, nothing else mattered in life at that moment. School, work, family, friends, money, nothing mattered, only that moment. At this point Hudson made a comment about how hot I felt. As I said earlier, the moment she sat on my lap, my body’s temperature went straight up. I could feel by body temperature going up and I knew she could tell as well. My breathing was fast and shallow, my palms were sweaty, and I was trembling like a little puppy. Hudson mentioned to the group about how much I was trembling and they all agreed with her.
Hudson then made a comment about how some guys being pigs and how I was being very polite to her. I responded by saying that usually all guys are pigs. But the thing is that every once in a while we pull ourselves out of the mud, we clean ourselves off and we do something nice. Hudson said that all guys are not pigs, and I said that was true, but when we get into groups we have a tendency to be pigs, to which she agreed.
Hudson then shifted her body because she noticed and she asked that were she was sitting, if it was hurting my legs because she was sitting right on my knees. I really did not mind, but because she noticed I greatly appreciated it. Hudson then inquired about my age because she recognized a young man of only sixteen years from the previous day sitting at my table. I told her that I was twenty-one, and she relaxed a bit more and fell a bit deeper into my arms and everyone got a chuckle out of this.
It was then time for Hudson to leave and move onto the next table, but before she did I asked one more favor of her. I remember so clearly that she said: "what would you like, honey?" I then let her know that the day before during the picture session that my best friend had received a kiss on the cheek from her. While I was mentioning this I began to cry a little and she noticed, because I saw this sparkle come to her eyes. As I asked her for a kiss as well, she reached for my chin, turned my head very softly to the left and left the softest and the most memorable kiss of my life on my right cheek. As the emotions began to well up I said thank you very quietly as she walked away and she said: "your very welcome."
Before the breakfast was over, I went up to Hudson and had my picture taken with her once more. Hudson once again gave the Chihuahua Boy’s head a little hug once again as the camera flashed. The last vision I have of Hudson is when I was walking away I said thank you once again, but before I turned to walk out the door she gave me the most beautiful smile as a goodbye of her own. This is what I will remember for the rest of my life; that last smile.
I never thought that a moment in my life could feel that good. But for a span of about five hours in which I was able to view the grace, charm, charisma, enthusiasm, and beauty that is Hudson Leick, and I knew what heaven would feel like when I got there. The sheer joy that I felt in my heart and in my soul may never be matched again during my lifetime. This is why I have and will continue to support Hudson’s career. She genuinely cares for her fans as much as we care for her. And as the tears stream down my face as I finish my story, all I can say to Hudson is, thank you for being you.
Editor’s note: The haze is alive and well. Hudson is truly all that and more. J
Convention Recollections:
I was at the convention in Palo Alto and it was an excellent convention. Hudson looked as beautiful as ever wearing a red dress that people said was doing all the talking, but of course, the dress was just highlighting who was doing the talking. Hudson received a lot of presents which included a personal parking sign, a couple of pictures of herself, and a pooh bear which had a a personal t-shirt. She threw out kisses (unfortunately they were the chocolate kind). For me, the highlight of the convention was when I got to kiss the hand of the lovely Hudson.

I'm a fairly new member of the HLOFC and since I've already shared my most memorable moment of the convention on the Holiday Card, I won't take up time and space here to repeat it other than to say that meeting Hudson on Saturday at the convention was one of the most memorable experiences of my life and since I'm not altogether that young, that's actually saying something!! <grin> I'm deeply disappointed and heartsick that none of the 6 or so photos I attempted came out – especially the one of Hudson and me. I hadn't planned on taking any photos, wasn't even sure
There'd be the opportunity so it was just dumb luck that I had my camera (and film) in my car. However, it's been altogether too long since I practiced taking indoor flash photography and it can be a tricky proposition at best and unfortunately the film and the electronic flash didn't sync up. It was very disappointing to find this out this afternoon when I went to pick up the prints and picture CD. So, a word of advice to any convention attendees. If photos are important, have a back up camera you know will operate properly, even if it's only a Polaroid - at least you'll have an instant idea if the picture came out. As I said, I'm very sad over the loss of a once-in-a-lifetime experience as I now have only my mental snapshots. I can only hope that I'll one day get another chance the next time if I'm fortunate enough to see Hudson up close and personal when she's next at a convention near enough for me to attend.
On a lighter note, I have only attended two Xena conventions and I had no idea what to expect from Hudson as a guest. I'd read on various web pages and had heard from people around me in the audience that she's one of the best actors or actresses to interact with her audience at convention appearances but until I myself had the chance to witness her warmth, her
Intelligence, that wicked wit of hers, but most of all, her kindness and compassion, I just didn't know.
May you and all the staff at the HLOFC have the safest, happiest and healthiest of holiday seasons
With those you love,

Blast From the Past (Palo Alto 2000)
Ephany
A few weeks ago, I did something that I didn’t think I’d be doing again anytime soon… I attended yet another Xena convention. Which just proves again, that everyone has their price. Mine of course, was the opportunity to see Hudson again, and no matter how ‘mellowed’ I may claim to be about my Xena obsession, I’ll always have a special affection for Hudson.
So it was that I found myself on a plane once again but there were a few notable differences between then and now. Mainly that the weekend that started about devoted to Xena (Hudson) eventually became a layered mass of varied plans from catching a play in nearby San
Francisco to meeting my girlfriend Shannon’s parents for the first time. It was a far cry from when I could spend an entire weekend in a hotel, watching, talking and living Xena and be completely content. But the variety made me appreciate Saturday more and it was nice to share a part of my life with Shannon, who was at a loss how to explain to her parents what kind of event I was attending. I told her not to try unless she wanted to ruin my chances at a good impression.
But on to the important things. I don’t know if it was the small size the con or what, but there was a mellow atmosphere that I’ve never experienced before at a Creation convention. I could swear I even observed polite behavior from some Creation employees! It was hard waiting around all day for the big event. There were a few bloopers I hadn’t seen before but mostly if you’ve seen one Creation con….Hudson was late of course but those of us who knew what was coming were happy to wait. I was trying to decide how and whether I should give her the gift I’d brought—a tee-shirt that said "I’m Evil, That’s Why!’’ Knowing that I’d see her at the breakfast Sunday morning, FOR ONCE, I didn’t feel the need to get up and draw attention to myself in front of 600 or so people. There was small table at the side of the stage with water on it so I settled on walking up during a quiet moment and leaving it on the table.
Finally she arrived and in the style to which her audiences have become accustomed. The best way I can describe her is a spunkier Marilyn Monroe in red. The wandered the stage for a few minutes letting the dress do the talking. Then she said something I really wasn’t expecting:
"Where’s Ephany?’’
Well, I couldn’t ask for a better welcome than that! I called out and she spotted me and smiled. ‘’Ephany, it’s been years!’’
‘’Yes, it has. I got you a present," I said, pointing to the table.
She went over and unfolded the shirt. She laughed and then held it up for the audience and read the caption for the people in back. I think she liked it. After that she turned her attention back to the audience. There was the usual figurative poking and prodding…as if maybe she’d just decide that we should entertain her instead. Then the questions got started for real. For the first time, I spent the entire time simply observing (and laughing, screaming and occasionally groaning aloud) and it was amazing to watch her work as always. If anything she seems happier now than I’ve ever seen her (and she said as much) and even more charming to the crowd. She had a lot of friends in the audience and she had a great time sharing this admittedly bizarre part of her job with them. ‘’Can you believe they pay me for this!?’’ she said at one point.
The best parts of the questions were when she invited a few friends up to share the experience. Poor Dave was NOT happy being onstage. He’d been conscripted to give a gift on behalf of a nervous fan and Hudson was merciless. She made him come all the way onstage and then gave him the microphone, when it was clear he just wanted to run. After a few questions though she saved him saying, ‘’I think you should go now…this isn’t a man-friendly crowd.’’
On the other hand, her friend Seb seemed like she’d be completely comfortable anywhere, be it on stage or in the middle of a Sunday school picnic. She took questions like an old pro. I asked how she met Hudson and that turned out to be a long and amazing tale indeed. Suffice to say she saw Hudson on Xena and connected with her in such a profound way that Hudson was moved to answer her letter with a phone call. They went on to become family and it’s obvious that they’re crazy about each other. When someone asked what projects she might be working on, Hudson replied, ‘’I’m teaching yoga.’’ She doesn’t seem concerned about whether she goes back to acting or not, and frankly, if this is the result of making connections with some good people and focusing on healthier things, I say more power to her, though I know that lots of fans will be disappointed!
The Q&A was filled with more gift-giving than I’d ever seen allowed at any convention, but then again, I think they know by now that Hudson’s time on stage is HERS and she decides what’s ok and what’s not. Afterwards with only a short break, she proceeded to sign autographs for EVERYONE in the room and take pictures. For a while they showed videos and when those ran out, Hudson asked for some background music. That inspired and idea and I grabbed a CD from my room and the DJ graciously let me play a dedication: 32 Flavors, the song I serenaded her with at the Jan ’98 convention. I couldn’t see her face, but the happy scream when the song came on was reward enough. Her energy seemed unflagging and she seemed to be having a genuinely good time. Another notable difference in this trip…I didn’t have a camera, so I just did what I usually do and sat and watched the proceedings, awed as usual.
The Sunday breakfast was an even nicer affair… very laid back and relaxing. The food was even good and the high point of the morning was hearing a student who received a scholarship from the charity talk about what it meant to her and her family. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room and it was a nice reminder of things that are really important in the world outside of television. Still everyone was excited when the actors finally showed and made their way from table to table, chatting it up. It was nice meeting Ebonie Smith (M’Lila) and even better listening to her mother tell stories about her. I think all the moms should attend cons with their star-kids so we can get the real dish. :-) Our table was one of the last for Hudson to visit. She bounded over and crouched rather than sat in a chair between me and Geekgrrl. ‘’Ok Ephany, I’m here." Our table had a nice 10 minutes or so, just chatting. It almost felt normal. She talked a little more about Seb and how they ended up being so close. It was apparent that it was just meant to be. I mentioned Shannon and Hudson wanted to meet her but she was up in our room sleeping off our night of dancing. I did get a hug finally, which I’ve been known to fly across the country for…but I was glad I didn’t have to go that far this time! All too soon it was time for her to move on. She abandoned the chairs and started sitting in the middles of the tables, among the leftover dishware from breakfast. As I guess happens often now, someone asked her to do a yoga pose so she stood up and did the downward dog pose right on the table…in heels no less!
After a group photo with the other actors, Hudson closed down the house again, giving everyone one last chance to take pictures with her. On an impulse I called Shannon on my cell phone and told her she should come down and meet Hudson. And she did so we got in the picture line (me still with no camera) and I got to introduce them, which was fabulous for me. Having gotten what I came for and more went off to the rest of my weekend with a nice feeling of closure. Who knows if Hudson will make to the Pasadena con, (or if I will) or if I’ll see her again on screen or in person. If I don’t this was certainly a nice way to round things off.
I wish Hudson all the best in whatever she does. I know she’ll spread joy to everyone around her, whether it is in person or on screen.
My great Convention experience came this year in London at the Chariots of War2. Hudson was very funny and wonderful to chat to also. She Frightened the life out of me when she let that "scream" out at the photo session on Saturday morning.

Starfury 2000:Chariots of War part2
By Ralf S
[Shallowfocus@lycosmail.com]
Once upon a time in a land far away...
There was a very sweet girl with blonde hair and brown eyes... and her name was Hudson Leick. The Starfury: Chariots of War part two convention in London was my first convention -- and it was supposed to be my farewell to Hudson Leick. Needless to say that I felt like a betrayer after all these years but I thought that I'd probably spent too much time with her work. However, since I had never visited a convention before I was quite curious about the upcoming event. I arrived late at the Hotel Radisson Edwardian, Heathrow in London where the convention took place. It was only one hour left until the cocktail party with the guests. As one of the very few Germans there, I pretty much felt like an alien. I looked for the dealer's room where the HLOFC fan booth was supposed to be, but since no one was there, I decided to leave. Later, I returned and introduced myself to Marty Slater, a very handsome guy and marvelous artist. I had a closer look at some of the collages and magazines there on the table. Great stuff, some people lovingly put together! I remember, I was kidding that Marty would look fine in his "Callisto sacked my village. All I got was this lousy tee shirt" T-shirt, but he insisted to change his clothes for the following cocktail party. Btw, the next day he was so kind to give me a copy of one of his drawings with a note on the back which I forget to read in the haste...
The first one hundred fifty attendees with a full registration were allowed to join a cocktail party with the guests (Hudson Leick, Adrienne Wilkinson, Paris Jefferson, Ted Raimi and Timothy Omundson). The journey left me exhausted, scared and a little scatterbrained. So, I was in the right condition to attend a cocktail party with Hudson Leick and the other guests. The pool area, where the party took place, was a very nice place within the hotel. A wide area with large windows, stairs, plants, little pools, desks, and tables. Unfortunately, since English is not my native language, it was a matter of fact that I would probably look foolish. I was scared to death. But too many things remain unspoken. At least, since Hudson Leick is one of my favorite actresses besides Parker Posey, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and a few others, I wanted to thank her. Hudson Leick entered the party with about an one hour delay. I remember a few minutes before she showed up that a couple of questions entered my mind. Would I recognize her? Would she look different from her TV- appearances? Would it be disappointing? Hard to believe, but she definitely looked cuter than on TV in her marvelous dress. Her brown eyes sparkled and her beauty was dazzling. Females not only have sharp elbows -- they are blessed in many ways. Fans surrounded her immediately. She made eye contact, exchanged a few words here and there, and shook hands. One time - I swear - I saw, she (friendly) slapped Ted Raimi's butt. It was more like a daydream -- or fairy tale, so unreal. You watch these people on TV for years and suddenly, you can see them in real life. However, I met a couple of other crazy fans there, like Gerry, Marty, Sean, and Walter. Walter offered an album with photos. So, at one point, Hudson Leick sat down and studied the photos while she made some funny remarks. As I watched the party, it sunk in that I would probably never find the courage to thank her. That was so sad. Later on, Hudson Leick turned and began to talk to Marty Slater besides me. She knows him from several conventions. This way, I was caught between her, Marty, and the desk behind me. I thought, that I was way too close and tried to leave until Hudson stopped me and said, "You can stay here". Sure, but I was terrified. Just the moment she turned again and seemed to look for something to drink, I desperately asked her, "May I say something?", which she assented to. I nearly panicked. I thought it would be stupid, and in a way it was, but I softly mentioned that I love her work and that it's bold, brave and full of lovely ideas and apologized for my English. She answered, "No, it's okay" and asked for my name which I had to repeat several times while I held her cold little hand.
The next day of the Starfury con was Saturday, and it began with a photo session. Hudson Leick was in a great mood. It was so much fun to see her work. I guess, we stared at her graceful movements while she posed with the attendees. For every attendee she seemed to have a different, but always entertaining, pose. Once, she jumped right into the arms of a guy. I don't know, if she recognized that I was a little shy and terrified but as it was my turn she squeezed me until I started to smile. I felt, like I was dying in the arms of an irresistible octopus -- but I was a happy victim. It was so INTENSE! She was such a sweetie -- and I forgot to say it.
The guest talks with Hudson Leick Saturday and Sunday were interesting experiences. Hudson Leick was witty, charming and Callisto-like while she put her spell on the audience. Sunday, she played a lot with the audience - pretty much like her character Callisto - and served thirsty attendees with water... but who wouldn’t be thirsty if someone like her would serve the water. She had to order more water. Further on, she entertained the audience with bedtime stories ("Once upon a time in a land far far away. There was a veryveryveryvery sweet... veryveryvery sweet... girl...with blonde hair and brown eyes. And sheee... no longer liked her cat."). Poor cat! She did her famous battle cry twice -- with and without microphone. Finally, she introduced her girl friend Chandra to the audience so that we could ask her something – about Hudson Leick. She seemed to regret this decision when Chandra told us that Hudson leaves "piles of dead men" behind her. Hudson further insisted that Chandra would do the same...
The autograph session was another exciting experience. I had a German TV-magazine with Hudson Leick as Callisto on the cover and a glossy from Maternal Instincts someone was so kind to send me years ago. :) I was surprised that there eventually was time to talk with the guests. I showed Hudson Leick the magazine in order to entertain her and told her, "They love you there". I don't know if this was appropriate but it's definitely true. Many fans enjoy her style there. She seemed to like two photos in the magazine and pointed at them: a publicity shot and a convention photo where she performed her battle cry. She told me, that her parents were in Germany while she was shooting Hijacked (Hijacked: Flight 285) so that she wasn't able to meet her relatives. Unfortunately, I was a little intimidated and English still wasn't my native language. I only dared to say that "Maybe there will be a convention one day" and "We miss you" because I had heard that she wanted to end her acting career some time ago. I would not only miss her work -- but also her personality. However, I bet one day she will meet her relatives and everything will be fine. Finally, she asked me, if I would be there tomorrow, which I confirmed.
The fancy dress parade Saturday evening was one of the highlights of the convention. Extremely funny! Ted Raimi and Timothy Omundson but also Hudson Leick had a lot of fun with the attendees. I especially remember one terrific moment when Hudson got up and literally jumped on stage where she turned herself into the heavy smoking Liz Friedman. Cute!
Sunday evening, during the closing ceremony, Hudson Leick seemed to be very touched while she expressed her gratitude for all the kindness that occurred to her. She further mentioned that if we ever came to L.A., we should visit her -- and give her a foot massage. I don't know if someone will EVER need so many foot massages. After all, it was a very impressive experience to see Hudson Leick in real life -- and not on TV. Something I didn't expect. Something I can highly recommend. Her grace was amazing. And, best of all, she has a refreshing personality and indeed is a very caring person. She did never hurt anyone. I saw it. As much as anyone I appreciated her kindness. It always comes back. And she's a good example that great things are possible through passion, boldness and persistence. I would love to see her again. Days later I read what Marty Slater was so kind to write at the back of a copy of one his drawings (Forget the "this is the last time!" speech. We will again...). Marty, if you're reading this, you're probably right.
Editor’s note: That seems to be the consensus, if you have seen Hudson live once, you will find a way to make it happen again. :-)
Hudson from the Starfury Chariots of War Part II:
Xena convention September 22-24
By Joanna [jo@star-light.freeserve.co.uk]
Friday 22nd September 2000 - The Cocktail Party.
The weekend event was held at The Radisson Edwardian Hotel near Heathrow in London. Friday arrived and I was so excited, I got to the hotel early afternoon as I was one of the lucky ones to be attending the cocktail party, a couple of my friends that were going had been unfortunate enough to be a bit later than me booking, I was to attend the party on my own. Time went by quickly and after registering late afternoon/early evening, I met up with one of my friends Denise and we booked our photo tickets for the following day, I left my friend a little after 7.30 pm in the Polo Bar (I think that is what it is called) with another Hudson fan who we had met only minutes before, her name is Sarogini (sorry hope I got the spelling correct!) she was attending the convention on her own and had come from Belgium especially. I went into the party, which was being held where the swimming pool used to be but has since been cemented in and now has a black marble and wood check like floor. Looking around none of the guests had arrived, so I bought myself a drink and looked for some people that I might be able to join. I found a couple of other ladies that were there on their own and we spent time together until the first guests appeared. I could not believe it, we managed to speak to Ted, Tim and Paris, Adrienne always had such a big group around her that we couldn't really get close enough. Hudson made an entrance down some stairs at about 9.00 PM from an upstairs suite into the what was pool area, she was dressed in pink a dress and matching cardigan, me and my new found convention friends Mariee and Caroline, just didn't stand a chance Hudson was just surrounded by so many people, we lingered in the open spaces just hoping to say hello, so when she got whisked away by one of the stewards....we sort of started edging towards her thinking this is our chance, but noooo.... a security type put his arm out and said "give her some air please" which I didn't mind, I actually had no intention of standing in her personal space and had not been one of the many who had been crowding round her in the first place, but was extremely put out that the horde who had been encircling her moved in again directly after the security guy had spoken to me, Mariee and Caroline! so we gave up on speaking to Hudson that night and tried to catch up with Adrienne (with no luck either).
Then the cocktail party was over and the disco started. I went in with Mariee and Caroline asked if they could save some seats and went to find my friend who I had left with Sarogini, as Hudson was on the dance floor, I rushed to find my friends at the bar and said "quick, quick, Hudson is dancing" and lead them back to my table, where Caroline and Mariee waited. It was lovely to watch Hudson enjoying herself on the dance floor and to the delight of 3 young boys aged from about 4-8 years old (I think, I am not terribly good with ages) she danced with them forming a running train round the dance floor. Ted and Tim also came into the party but sat against a wall talking. Sarogini, could not believe Hudson was just there and really wanted to have her picture taken with her, I kept encouraging her to just go and ask if she could have her picture taken, Sarogini did get up the courage just as Hudson was making her way to leave and she asked Hudson, Hudson gave her a huge hug and one of the security guys took the picture (if you read this Sarogini I hope the picture came out okay) Sarogini was absolutely delighted! My friend Denise and I did go up on the dance floor later that evening and really let our hair down. We all agreed to meet up at breakfast the following day before leaving.

Saturday 23rd September 2000 - Day One of the Convention.
Now Saturday arrived and we tried to set up a plan of action, we had all purchased our tickets to get our photos taken, Ted, Tim, Paris & Adrienne were all from 9.20 I think!?! can't remember exactly as my ticket was taken off me, and the Hudson photograph session was at 10.20 we managed to queue quite early on, for both session, but I will tell you about the Hudson session as she is our favourite! The photos were to be taken again in the what was pool area and we were all seated in chairs that were snaked about the room,
Hudson was brilliant while the camera man got ready, she made her way saying hello and talking to the queue, which got a unanimous "oh my god!" from me and my friends which we thought rather funny, but as fate would have it she did not make it to us anyway! Hudson was dressed in a beautiful black and white animal striped print dress with matching sash tied around her neck and long black patent high heeled boots, Hudson treated us to her Callisto scream which really echoed about the enclosed area, the queue moved pretty quickly and before I knew it, it was my turn, she out stretched her arms and said "come to me darling!" which was brilliant, I was all prepared for a formal hand shake, hello and pose! she was just brilliant she gave me a big hug and we both smiled for the camera! And then I was off, I think I
thanked her but can not remember, me and my friends all left walking on cloud nine (if you read
this Hudson) thank you. Caroline had left us and was not sure where she was - if I had thought about my action plan I would have known, but we purchased a few authorised pictures before going into the main hall (as these were the only authorised pictures the stars would sign, we were allowed one personal item and our photo with them signed).
Caroline was waiting for us in the main hall, she had saved us some seats for the talks. Which all went so quickly, when Hudson came on flashes in abundance went off, I was one of many taking pictures. Like
everybody else there I think we were all so stunned that she had made it to the convention, we had expected that work commitments would not permit her to come.... so much so that not very many questions were put to her, we had the odd stupid unexpected male remarks which Hudson handled superbly! She did however, make us all scream for her (much to her horror - I think!) before she screamed for us!?! She was brilliant, intelligent very witty and slipped into Callisto for us through out. One question I do remember was about being stereo typed as a blond bimbo which she did an excellent pose for! but I do not remember much of her answers as I was just in a state of shock and awe – I think.
The autograph queue was a nightmare as the pictures we had, had taken were not back yet, me and Mariee kept being bumped to the back of the queue, some of the stewards were saying one thing and the others another, which meant that Mariee and I had queued for about 3 hours before meeting the guests. Hudson was brilliant, she was so quick and signed the pictures that I wanted instead of the authorised pictures that I had purchased. She also commented about my picture with her and that I have beautiful eyes, well that comment was just brilliant and I was walking on air after that, she is just totally gorgeous and for her to comment on my eyes made me feel great!
The Fancy Dress party was a hoot, and took place on the Saturday evening Hudson, Ted and Tim all attended at the judging panel, oh, and not forgetting Hudson's friend Chandra (I think that is how you spell it!). It is great, the guy who won went as Lucifer with huge demon wings like from the
Fallen Angel episodes, excellent costume he won a playstation and Xena playstation game, Hudson had encouraged him sit on a chair like it was his rock as she had done as demon Callisto! Some brilliant prompting from Hudson and Ted for a guy grovelling in front of Xena, there was also a scene by Tim and Hudson for planting the seed/soul for Xena's baby (sorry if I got this bit wrong, haven't seen that episode yet!), unfortunately like most of the weekend, it was also over all too quickly.
Sunday 24th September 2000 - Day 2
Now I will skip to the Hudson talk on day 2 as I did not see her anywhere else that day prior to the talks, like army precision we sorted out our plan to hold our seats third row from the front, it was an excellent view and one we were lucky to obtain! Hudson appeared in a beautiful gold snake skin print dress
and shirt, with lovely gold earrings and gold strapped high heeled shoes. She again looked stunning, she was brilliant no matter what face she pulled she looked brilliant! We had loads of brilliant questions this time and Chandra came up on the stage to answer questions on Hudson's behalf, it was a lot of fun!! we found out that Hudson and Chandra were going on to do some further travelling in Europe to France I think and some other places too, but I can not remember them. Hudson did her Callisto scream for us with the microphone and also without! the thing I think we found the hardest was just shouting out the questions as we are so used to raising our hands
but Hudson was having none of that! we found out that Hudson would love to travel to India, she will be starting her own yoga classes, I forget which type of yoga (sorry!). All in all this talk session was over far too quickly! Hudson was just superb, very friendly and approachable. There was an evening raffle and the leaving ceremony, which I hope Hudson realised how much we appreciated her attending the weekend convention, Ted and Hudson being the most main characters from the show had been the ones to draw in the crowds that attended, they were both just superstars even through all the jet lag and the queuing fans and the photos being taken and the signings which overran! I had such a great time and am sure that everyone else who attended would agree. It was all brilliant the guests had surpassed themselves again! I would just like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Hudson, for making the weekend such a blast, for being so friendly and patient and understanding especially for all the photo taking!?! Thank you so very much, I know that I really appreciated it.
An Interview With Some Callisto's Tales Authors
Part 5b. Robert Buckley
Apologies to Robert for not getting the second part of his interview submitted for the June 2000 Newsletter. I totally dropped the ball on that one. Since this interview was last updated a year ago (with the original interview conducted over two years ago), I want to note that Robert has completed his first "rewrite" of the television history and is working on the next one. You can read his stories on his site at <
http://www.callisto.org.uk> or from the Callisto's Tales Fan Fiction site at <http://callistofic.8m.com>.December’s Newsletter Question: What would you wish for Hudson year round?
i think i'd wish her love.. and success
[warm_n_fuzzy@webtv.net]
If I had it within my power to grant Hudson anything for the New Year and beyond, it would be that she always share the love of someone special, that she always have health to enjoy life in all it's infinite diversity; she always have friends around her to keep her grounded, that she never lose that fierce spirit tempered by her gentle and compassionate heart and that she know that we are all a part of something greater than ourselves.
[Qwiklight@yahoo.com]
I'd wish she had good health, happiness, and God's blessing. Not to mention lots of success. Thanks, Hudson, for being Callisto. You were awesome!
Sincerely,
leigh
I would wish that she find a man who would love and respect her despite her fame. And I'll be happy to apply for the position. :-)
Troy
Editor’s note: I think there might be a line ;-)
I'd wish for Hudson to have a year of living each day, so that she doesn't regret it.
Jill
Love, of course, and the best of all good things. Ok, Ok! Her own TV series. I mean if they can do this Cleopatra 2525 thing, then why not something for the best actress ever. Don't they know that they are depriving the world, and us, of the art that is Hudson. Ok. I'm well vented now.
Michael
In answer to your question regarding a wish for Hudson, it would Be continued health and happiness for her and better recognition for her here in England.
Stuart
The things we wish for ourselves, I hope. Love, dignity and health. She deserves to be blessed for she has given so much to all of us, her fans. Thank you Hudson, Namaste. Or, as it was translated for me, the divinity in me recognizes the divinity in you :-)
Editor’s note: I think everyone’s sentiment captures the essence of what we all wish for Hudson year round, all good things to a good soul.
Once, it seems like forever ago, Debbie thanked me for some work I had done for the HLOFC. I think now would be a good time to thank some people for the incredible work and effort they have put into the HLOFC and the HLOWS. First off, I think a big thank you needs to go out to Debbie herself, an often invisible, behind the scenes kind of person who has help to keep things running behind the scenes at the HLOFC. A fan-club is often a commitment to the fans, and Debbie has donated countless hours of her own time and resources since the inception of the HLOFC. And I know I mentioned them earlier, but I think for every single one of you who has enjoyed the photo’s, transcripts, articles, almost anything and everything that you can imagine about Hudson who have come to the website to find it should offer up a very big thank you to Wesser and his not so new assistant, Mike Ownby. These 2 gentlemen have dedicated countless hours, resources and ingenuity to bring you this site and the really awesome badges and display found at every convention this year. I receive many great emails thanking me for the work being done, but if you can, drop thank you to any one of these people, because from Day 1, Debbie and Wesser and Shaddy have been in the thick of this and along the way – some of us wandered along and joined in. It has been 3 years in September for the HLOFC. 3 great, wild wonderful years! So congratulate yourselves and make sure you say a big thank you to these people, they have worked hard.
